A catalog-writing agent can make a plain supplier sheet sound persuasive in seconds. The difficult question is whether the resulting description still says only what the merchant can substantiate. Invented compatibility, materials or dimensions can create customer disappointment and expensive corrections even when the prose looks excellent.
Treat catalog enrichment as controlled transformation. The agent converts approved product facts into useful customer language, preserves uncertainty and prepares a field-level change proposal. It does not become an independent source of product truth.
Build a source-of-truth map
List the fields that matter for the product category: dimensions, material, included components, care instructions, compatibility and variant options, for example. Identify the approved source for each field. A supplier spreadsheet may govern dimensions while an internal product team governs supported use cases.
Keep source dates and product identifiers. A specification for a previous model should not flow into the current item merely because the names are similar. If two sources disagree, create a conflict record rather than selecting whichever value is easier to write about.
Set explicit rules for unknown values. “Not provided” is often the correct internal result. The customer-facing copy can omit an unsupported detail or ask the merchandising owner to supply it. The agent should not fill empty fields with common characteristics of similar products.
Resolve products before generating copy
Use stable product and variant IDs wherever possible. Titles, colors and supplier codes can change or overlap. A fuzzy name match can help identify candidates, but it should not establish identity on its own.
Preserve variant-level distinctions. A dimension or material that applies to one variant may not apply to every variant under the same product. Likewise, a product image may show accessories that are not included. The agent needs an explicit included-items source rather than an assumption based on appearance.
Create an extraction table before writing prose. Each proposed attribute should include value, unit, source and confidence limitation. Deterministic checks can catch impossible formats, mixed units or missing currency codes. They cannot establish that a plausible value is true; source verification still matters.
Draft within factual boundaries
Give the agent a style guide and an allowed-claims policy. It can improve readability, explain a documented feature and organize specifications. It should not add certifications, medical benefits, environmental claims or safety assurances without approved evidence and appropriate review.
Compatibility deserves particular care. A phrase such as “works with all standard mounts” is broader than a list of tested mount types. Preserve the narrow supported statement. If the source says a component is optional, do not rewrite it as included to make the description flow better.
Separate factual edits from stylistic edits in the review interface. Reviewers can then see whether a change merely shortens a sentence or introduces a new assertion. A concise claim ledger is more useful than asking someone to compare two polished paragraphs from memory.
Understand the write operation before preparing it
Shopify's productSet documentation describes a powerful synchronization operation, not a harmless text replacement. It treats list fields differently from other fields: existing list entries omitted from the input can be deleted, while omitted non-list fields remain unchanged. That distinction can turn a partial-looking update into an unintended catalog change.
The agent should therefore prepare a preview of the exact affected fields and list entries. Do not send a productSet payload generated from incomplete source data simply because it validates syntactically. For a narrowly scoped copy edit, choose an operation and payload appropriate to that scope after checking current platform documentation.
Keep write permissions separate from the drafting process. Shopify documents write_products and user permission requirements for productSet. A drafting service should not need broad catalog mutation authority merely to propose descriptions.
Review and apply in controlled batches
Start with a small, diverse batch: simple products, products with many variants, incomplete specifications and products with conflicting supplier information. Have a merchandising owner check factual fidelity and an editor check readability.
Approval should cover a specific diff, not a broad instruction to “improve the catalog.” Record which fields and products are authorized to change. Recheck the current product state before applying an approved payload so a concurrent human edit is not overwritten.
Where the operation is asynchronous, monitor the documented operation state rather than assuming the initial response means completion. Inspect user errors and verify the resulting product record. Keep a before-state snapshot or other approved recovery mechanism appropriate to the change.
Test with deliberately awkward products
A good evaluation set contains ambiguous units, nearly identical model names, missing accessories and contradictory compatibility notes. It should also include tempting but unsupported marketing claims. The agent should omit or escalate them rather than produce plausible filler.
Measure unsupported-attribute rate, wrong-variant assignment, unit-conversion errors and reviewer correction time. Readability scores alone are insufficient. A description that is easier to read but factually broader is a regression.
Check the rendered storefront as well as the stored data. Formatting, truncation and option presentation can alter meaning. Confirm that the customer sees the intended caveats and that no important specification disappeared in a template or channel-specific field.
Count the cost of verification
The economic benefit is a hypothesis about reduced preparation effort, not a guaranteed conversion uplift. Track source cleanup, model use, integration maintenance and human review. If supplier data is disorganized, most effort may go into resolving facts rather than drafting language.
Do not deploy this workflow to categories where the team cannot substantiate consequential claims or provide qualified review. Begin with ordinary descriptive attributes and tightly bounded products. Expand only when the process consistently preserves source meaning.
A trustworthy catalog agent is valuable precisely because it can leave a blank. The business does not need a system that always has something persuasive to say. It needs a system that helps publish accurate, useful product information without quietly turning uncertainty into a promise.
