Product Catalog Cleanup as an AI Service

A catalog cleanup project can look deceptively simple: ask an AI system to improve every product description. The danger is that better prose can conceal worse facts. An invented compatibility claim or an incorrect dimension can increase returns, disappoint customers, and create costly support work.

A stronger service focuses on approved facts, consistent structure, and reviewable changes. The proposed model is a paid pilot followed by a per-approved-SKU or bounded project fee. It does not promise a conversion uplift from rewriting, and it should not treat every product field as equally safe to change.

Define the catalog standard

Agree on the merchant's taxonomy, required attributes, units, and naming conventions. A furniture catalog may need dimensions and materials; an electronics catalog may need model compatibility and connector details. A generic “SEO description” template cannot substitute for domain requirements.

Separate product-level information from variant-level information. Color, size, price, and stock may vary within a product family. Shopify's productUpdate reference explicitly distinguishes product updates from variant updates. Use the correct operation and verify the current API version rather than assuming one mutation can change every field.

Decide which sources are authoritative. Manufacturer specifications, merchant-approved data, and verified supplier documents can support factual edits. A competitor's listing or a model's general knowledge should not become an unreviewed source for claims about the item being sold.

Audit before generating

Start with a sample across product types, suppliers, and catalog age. Identify missing fields, inconsistent units, duplicate descriptions, outdated claims, and mismatches between text and structured attributes. Rank issues by customer impact rather than by how easy they are to rewrite.

Keep factual corrections separate from stylistic edits. A missing voltage specification is different from an awkward sentence. A reviewer should be able to approve a wording improvement without accidentally approving an unsupported technical change.

Create an uncertainty register. If two source documents disagree about a dimension, preserve the conflict and assign an owner. Do not select the most plausible value simply to finish the batch. The service should make missing information visible rather than fill every blank at any cost.

Generate field-level proposals

For each suggested change, store the original value, proposed value, reason, and supporting source. This produces a reviewable diff and a rollback record. A long replacement description without provenance is harder to inspect and more expensive to maintain.

Use deterministic transformations for simple operations such as unit normalization, capitalization rules, and prohibited-character checks. Reserve model assistance for tasks involving interpretation or rewriting. The more of the workflow that can be checked mechanically, the easier it is to audit.

Constrain generation to approved facts. If a product has no verified waterproof rating, the description should not imply one. If compatibility is unknown, say less or request clarification. Persuasive language is not a substitute for substantiation.

Design the review queue

Route changes according to risk. Formatting and obvious duplicate punctuation may need a light review. Safety claims, materials, compatibility, warranty wording, and regulated statements require appropriate expertise. The merchant should define these categories and retain final authority.

Show reviewers the smallest useful unit of change. A side-by-side field comparison with source evidence is more efficient than asking them to reread an entire catalog page. Include an easy reject or request-information action so uncertainty does not become reluctant approval.

Measure reviewer disagreement and rejection reasons. Repeated rejections may reveal a weak source, an unclear style rule, or a prompt that routinely overstates benefits. Fix the recurring cause rather than asking reviewers to absorb it indefinitely.

Apply approved edits safely

Use a staged rollout and preserve snapshots of changed fields. Confirm that each update affected the intended product and that the storefront renders correctly. A successful API response is useful evidence, but it does not prove that the resulting customer-facing page is complete and readable.

Handle rate limits and partial failures without silently skipping products. Keep a task ledger with approved, submitted, verified, and failed states. Retrying a batch should not overwrite a newer human edit with an older generated proposal.

Coordinate with merchandising campaigns and inventory changes. A description approved last week may no longer match the current product package. Recheck critical facts before applying delayed changes, especially when several teams edit the same records.

Price approved work, not generated volume

A per-SKU fee can be understandable, but complexity varies. A simple accessory with five attributes may require less work than a technical product family with many variants. Define complexity bands or a bounded pilot before committing to a large fixed price.

Include source collection, review, application, and verification in the economics. Generating 10,000 descriptions is not valuable if reviewers reject most of them or if nobody can safely apply the results. Track first-pass approval, correction time, and verified completion.

An illustrative pilot might cover a small category with known source documents and a clear reviewer. Stop if authoritative facts are unavailable or review effort exceeds the expected benefit. The final deliverable should be a cleaner catalog and a maintainable process, not a folder of attractive text awaiting uncertain approval.

Revenue or conversion improvements require their own measurement design. Treat them as hypotheses to test, not guaranteed consequences of catalog cleanup. The immediate, defensible value is accurate information, consistent structure, and less manual repair.
